Vegans of the World: Cherie

As an avid Aussie traveller, Cherie moved to a small town outside of Bangkok in the pursuit of Muy Thai Life. She is one bad ass Vegan proving that you can kick some serious Muy Thai butt fueled by plants.

I spent the last year getting to know Cherie digitally before having the pleasure of meeting her in Canggu, Bali on a Vegan Travel Trip in Sept 2024 and then again for a delicious vegan lunch at Plantiful in the Thonglor area of Bangkok!

Let's find out more about Cherie's vegan journey:

Q: When did you first go Vegan?
A: About 8-9 years ago

Q: What happened, what was the reason you chose to go Vegan?
A:   I was vegetarian but had some health issues and decided to try plant-based to cut out inflammatory foods such as eggs and dairy. I had other people that were vegan but the decision to cut eggs and dairy from my diet and go plant-based was my own choice

Q: How did you feel when you made the decision to go Vegan?
A: I was motivated to determined to fix some ongoing health issues on my own after struggling for years and was happy when something finally started working!

Q: What 3 words best describe how you felt?
A:
Healthy, overwhelmed, free

Q: What was or has been the most challenging part?
A: Its an ongoing learning process. Mentally it’s easy to be tough on yourself but remembering its about intention not perfectionism helps. There are challenges when travelling but overall it’s worth it.

Q: What was the hardest food for you to 'give up'?
A: In the beginning my diet was heavily dependent on eggs and dairy because I already cut meat and seafood and I felt very restricted because I didn’t know what to eat. So I think eggs might be the hardest overall to replace/swap out.

Q: What do you find the most challenging about being around non vegan people?
A:  Nothing. I don’t think we should push our views on others or judge their decisions. There was a time when I was not vegan - but I enjoy having conversations about health and wellness.

Q: What's it like being Vegan in Bangkok, Thailand?
A: Bangkok has increasingly more vegan options, cafes and events! Street food can be a challenge but you eventually figure out what is vegan friendly. Theres a wide range of international cuisines and an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Q: What's your favourite animal?
A:
I love all animals

Q: What's your favourite food or what do you eat the most, at least 3+ times a week?
A: I
n Thailand it’s mostly fresh fruit, a variety of rice/vegetable dishes, noodles/soup and coconut shakes

Q: What do you find is most challenging when it comes to Vegan Fashion?
A:  I haven’t really thought about this but maybe when it comes to the gym/muay thai as the gear is usually made from leather or a mix of leather and synthetic fabric (gloves shoes etc)

Q: What was the craziest thing that someone has said about being Vegan?
A:  In the fitness community there is a lot of conversation around protein and that you need meat/whey protein to be fit and healthy

Q: As a Fierce female, what do you consider to be your #1 Super Power?
ABeing able to adapt and enjoying the present moment / creating the life I want to live

Q: What's your go to Vegan thing that you share?
A: I went plant based following medical mediums books and attribute finally cutting eggs and dairy and going vegan to these books because thats how I started!

Q: The #1 reason you are Vegan:
A: For My Health

I want to encourage everyone to give it a try! Its the best thing I ever did for my mental and physical health.
